Will you put your office skills to work for the Commonwealth?

Clerical positions with the Commonwealth involve much more than answering telephones and typing. Depending on the agency's need, clerical staff may schedule appointments, coordinate meetings, establish and maintain spreadsheets, supervise other clerical employees, order supplies, utilize a variety of software, provide services to the public, or work in a mailroom. Working in the clerical field offers many opportunities to perform an assortment of duties and expand your knowledge and skills.

Consistently representing the group with the most annual hiring, clerical employment can be found both on the state and local government levels. For many, entry-level clerical employment leads to promotional opportunities and a rewarding career. Some individuals may choose a path that leads to higher level office support positions such as Clerical Supervisor or Executive Secretary. Other clerical staff may pursue jobs that involve technical or administrative functions, such as fiscal assistant, human resource assistant or administrative assistant, each of which has its own career ladder.

In addition to the skills you gain on the job, the Commonwealth also provides excellent training opportunities. The Office of Administration's Keystone Academy for Learning offers free courses in several different Learning Series, including the Clerical and Administrative Support Series and a Microsoft Skill Building Series. Courses include interesting topics such as Effective Writing, Creative Problem Solving, Speaking with Confidence, Maximizing your Supervisory Potential, and all types of Microsoft software training at beginner and advanced levels. Courses are designed to give you the tools needed to effectively and successfully do your job.
